Dell For School? The Inspiron 17R in Peacock Blue

Dell's Inspiron 17R
I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 17R off of Dell.com, and I absolutely love it. I got it for a pretty nice deal which ultimately came out to a total of $659.99.

The 17.3 inch screen laptop packs quite a punch, and at the time I could choose from 3 different spicy colors, "Mars Black," "Tomato Red," or "Peacock Blue." I ended up choosing the "Peacock Blue." I decided to go with a 2010 Intel Core i3-350M processor clocked at 2.26 Ghz.
I had Windows Vista on my previous laptop and couldn't stand it, so this time I chose to go with Windows 7 Home Premium. I was quite excited because the CD drive I chose was an 8X CD/DVD burner, and DVDs could be burnt with dual layers (a technology that allows DVDs to hold twice the amount of information, around 8 GB). The 17R even came with a whopping 3 GB of RAM which is enough to handle any application or game in my library.

The hard drive space was nice as well, as it came with a capacity of 320 GB. For me, that was great, because I love storing music on my computers.

One downside to this notebook was the included graphics card. It is equipped with an integrated Intel graphics (Intel HD Graphics to be specific), and you probably won't be able to play most modern computer games without a custom video card. That's fine as I'm not an avid gamer.

I initially bought the 17R for school as well as personal reasons, and I was delighted to find out Microsoft Office 2010 Starter was included. I had been using Microsoft Office 2007 for quite some time, so it was a relief to find out that I would be upgrading. The software pack was even included in the initial price of the laptop.

Lastly, the Inspiron came with a 1 year basic service plan included the price, which was a plus. However, laptops usually tend to last multiple years, so extending warranty or the "service plan" was going to cost extra if I planned on needing help from Dell a few years down the road.

Overall, the Dell Inspiron 17R is an affordable solution for anybody wanting a quality 17 inch notebook on a budget under $700.
