Overview of the Toshiba Mini NB305-N410 |
![]() |
The Toshiba NB305 is a solid entry into the netbook market, representing both a continuation and an improvement on the design of its predecessor, the NB205. Virtually every element has been improved, and those that haven't been upgraded at least remain consistent with the performance we've come to expect from the series. The first impression that springs to mind is the sleeker design compared to the NB205. The 305 replaces the back-jutting battery with one that extends slightly underneath the computer. This raises the angle of the netbook slightly when typing, but also eliminates what was essentially a wasted inch of space from the back. |

The design tapers at all sides now, producing a slimmer and more agreeable look, as well as a more comfortable ergonomic experience. The weight has remained the same, but is still only 2.8 pounds. The screen is a 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600-pixel LED-backlit display. The 305 retains the 'island' style of keyboard, and this combines with generous key sizes (especially shift keys) to make typing more like a traditional laptop than a netbook. While the function keys are a bit small, and some of the function options are grey and therefore vanish on the silver keys, it remains an utter pleasure to type on the Nb305. The 305 sports all the expected features for a current-generation netbook - audio input and output ports, multiple USB ports, an ethernet port, and so on. This netbook uses the Pine Trail version of the Atom, clocking in at 1.66 gHz and performing within the same range as other models such as the Asus EEE or HP's Mini 5102. The six-cell battery did lose some battery life, averaging out at 8:37, but this is still well within most users' needs. All in all, the Nb305 performs well compared to similar netbooks and achieved Laptop Magazine's prestigious "Editor's Award" in January 2010. Some netbooks might offer slightly better performance or an hour of extra battery life, and usually for less money, but the Toshiba Nb305 has ergonomics that set it apart and make it worth the extra investment.
