Samsung NC20 - Nifty Nano Silver or Health Hazard?

Image of a Samsung NC20
Samsung is arguably the best known South Korean brand in the world. An innovator in the field of mobile technology, LCD displays and laser printers, they also manufacture laptops. Let us introduce you to one of the latest in their notebook line up, the affordable Samsung NC20.

Tipping the scales at a svelte 3.4 pounds, and sporting a 12 inch screen and elegant, minimalistic design (the models we saw were in black or white). The NC20 is powered by VIA's new Nano U2250 processor, so it is by no means a 3D gaming warhorse, but the NC20 does boast a generous 160GB (5400rpm S-ATA) of storage space and offers 1GB of RAM. A built in webcam, 6 hours of battery life and a crisp 12.1 inch screen make this machine suitable for road warriors looking for something bigger than the 10 inch netbooks on the market right now, but lighter, more portable than a typical middle weight 15-4 inch laptop.

The NC20 features an ergonomic keyboard with 18.5mm key pitch, that should help prevent strain on your wrists. The keyboard also utilises the latest Nano Technology to coat the keyboard with tiny particles of silver ion powder. This process allegedly makes it difficult for bacteria to form from crumbs and spills that often result from an evening of robust computing, cake and coffee consumption.

However, the use of nano silver is controversial In the face of increased concerns about the potential health risks that nano silver poses to humans and the enviroment. Indeed, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced that it would move to introduce nanotechnology-specific regulations. The US EPA will now move to regulate products that contain microscopic "nanoparticles" of silver. Friends of the Earth and other groups have also tabled concerns. On the flip side of the coin others believe that Nano Silver has the potential to kill bacterial pathogens and viruses without causing any harm to our bodies. Wise to do your own research before purchasing.

We saw prices in the States as low as $370.17 for the NC20, prices in the UK are frustratingly more expensive at around 380 pounds.
